We Need our Forests!

It is known that many plants and animals help to produce medicines. Because of deforestation many plants and wildlife are becoming extinct. Who knows if the cure for many disease are not still there and if those species disappear for complete, we are never going to be able to synthetically produce the medicines able to treat and cure some illnesses?!
Here is a short list of some of the drugs, their origins, and what they do:

Drug /// Plant or Animal or Fungus /// Effect

Aspirin - Willow tree bark - pain killer

Antibiotic Penicillin - mold (fungus) on citrus fruits -fights bacteria

Guggulsterone - sap of the Guggul tree -lowers cholesterol

Cytosar-U® - Caribbean Sea sponge -treats leukemia and lymphoma

Ecteinascidin - Tunicate or Sea Squirt -experimental cancer treatment

Prialt™ - Cone Snails -Pain Killer (1000 times stronger than morphine)

Taxol® - Pacific Yew tree -Cancer drug

"Deforestation is clearing Earth's forests on a massive scale, often resulting in damage to the quality of the land. Forests still cover about 30 percent of the world’s land area, but swaths the size of Panama are lost each and every year. The world’s rain forests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation" http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/deforestation-overview.html

Not only through the food chain all the species are connected. Some chemicals act as immuno-defenders making us all interdependent!

Bamboo, Accelerating Reforestation!

The solution for stoping deforestation is to lower the rate in which we consume wood and the key for this is recycling and using this resource wisely, instead of wasting with junk mail and other useless things. Reforestation is also a must! I know that some trees take a long time to grow, but that is all we can do, right?!

An interesting and relevant "chapter of this book" that I was reading about the other day and could be extremely useful in helping to stop this predicament was about bamboo! Bamboo is one of the world’s most prolific and fastest-growing plants and is able to reach maturity in about four years, compared to the typical 25 to 70 years for commercial tree species in the U.S. There are over 1000 documented uses of bamboo. New innovations are taking place in home furnishings where bamboo is transformed into ply boards that match the properties of conventional wood. Bamboo is also being spun into luxurious fabrics for clothing and, coming soon, upholstery. I saw a bike made of bamboo and it looked really nice!

Bamboo is nature's most sustainable resource, is grown without pesticides or chemicals, is 100% biodegradable, and naturally regenerative. Bamboo is actually a tropical grass, with an extensive root system that sends out an average of four to six new shoots per year, naturally replenishing itself and growing to heights of 60 feet or more. Some bamboo species grow up to 4 feet per day and can be harvested every 3 to 4 years. Bamboo is also a critical element in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as it helps restore degraded areas and generates more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees. Bamboo lowers light intensity and protects against ultraviolet rays and is an atmospheric and soil purifier.

I am already a big fan!!! How about you?!

Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf and Fun with Car Math by Iamuocon

Volt from GM

Recently, Chevy announced its upcoming Volt, a hybrid-electric vehicle which it claims gets an equivalent of 230 mpg, according to a yet-to-be-finalized EPA formula for estimating fuel efficiency of hybrid vehicles. Unlike other hybrid vehicles such as Ford's Fusion or Toyota's Prius, the Volt is designed to run all the time off the on-board batteries, which hold 16 kilowatt hours, with a small gas-driven generator kicking on once the batteries dip below 8 kilowatt hours of remaining charge. It's extended range, as a result of the on-board generator, is about 340 miles. The Volt has sporty styling and good performance, and represents a big jump in fuel efficiency compared to existing vehicles on the road. Two potential drawbacks are life of the battery and the initial cost of the vehicle, which GM is setting near $40,000, initially.

Nissan has also entered the market with a fully electric vehicle, called the Leaf. Using the same yet-to-be-finalized formula, the Leaf's "fuel efficiency" equates to a whopping 367 mpg. The Leaf uses a 24 kwh lithium-ion battery, giving it a range of 100 miles. It's styling is nice, although less sporty, but it has the added advantage that Nissan is pricing it in a much more affordable range. Nissan executives claim the sticker price will be comparable to a nicely apportioned "C-segment" compact car (which would put it somewhere in the $20,000 - $30,000 range).

Both of these vehicles are predicated on the fact that the majority of traveling most car owners do are short commutes to and from work or shopping. The inherent strategy being banked on by both companies is that for buyers whose daily commute is 80 miles or less, round-trip, the extremely high fuel efficiency of either vehicle will be too good to pass up.

And, just for some added comparison, let's look at the fuel-efficiency of a few other comparable vehicles--

* Volkswagen Jetta TDi -- 30 city / 41 highway
* Toyota Prius -- 51 city / 48 highway
* Ford Fusion -- 41 city / 36 highway
* Toyota Yaris (gas) -- 29 city / 36 highway
* Toyota Yaris (diesel) -- 68.9 combined (not avail. in the US)

The question is whether or not the Volt's 230 mpg or the Leaf's 367 mpg figures are reasonable or meaningful. We tend to use "miles per gallon" as a comparative figure for fuel-efficiency, because we always have, but this opens the comparison up for some game playing. For the Volt, any extended driving beyond the 40-mile range involves extensive running of the generator, and the fuel efficiency of the vehicle drops down into the 50-100 mpg range, depending on the distance driven. For the Leaf, driving beyond the 100 mile range isn't even a possibility, unless the vehicle became ubiquitous enough for Nissan or its partners to provide battery-swapping stations-- a strategy Nissan has said it won't adopt in the US (presumably due to the sheer geographic area that would need to be covered).

Given a mixture of driving ranges, GM estimates the cost-per-mile in fuel of driving the Volt would equate to somewhere between 2 and 3 cents per mile. (The Leaf purports to cost about 2 cents per mile). GM is, of course, highlighting this claim by making a comparison to a vehicle getting 20 miles per gallon at (and I've seen various figures given) somwhere between $2.75/gallon and $3.60/gallon. Their claim is that the average driver pays 15 cents per mile compared to the Volt's less-than 3 cents per mile. A more useful comparison would be with vehicles with which the Volt would be expected to compete, such as the Prius or Fusion.

* Volt -- 2.5 cents per mile
* Leaf -- 2.2 cents per mile
* Prius -- 5.4 cents per mile
* Fusion -- 6.7 cents per mile
* Yaris (diesel) -- 3.9 cents per mile

AT roughly 3 cents per mile better cost performance, the Volt would save something on the order of $360/year over the Toyota Prius. But when you consider the difference in sticker price of the two vehicles (roughly $15,000), you'd need to drive the Volt for far beyond the life of the vehicle to make up the difference in cost. Nissan is on much firmer ground, here, with the Leaf, if its sticker price comes in anywhere near that of the Prius. And, of course, from purely a cost perspective, neither vehicle fairs as dazzlingly well when compared to a vehicle such as the diesel Yaris, which if it were sold in the US, would be priced around $17,000 dollars while delivering near comparable performance based on technology which is already proven.

I applaud both GM and Nissan for moving hybrid and PEV technology forward. Both vehicles are viable choices in today's marketplace. But I'd caution anyone tempted to fall for the hype about hundreds of miles per gallon fuel efficiency that those figures are not based on the actual cost per mile of real world driving. While both vehicles represent a step forward in fuel efficiency (and I mean total fuel efficiency), neither represents the order-of-magnitude advance being claimed by their developers.

1-Introduction
1.1-History
We are aware of the damage they cause to the environment such packages, we save them for good, awaiting
the implementation of selective collection in the city, which fortunately is beginning to happen.
But with respect to a useful destination Packages pet, tetra pak cartons, polystyrene trays, plastic bags, etc.. Came
to us the idea to apply them in a solar heater alternative. In consequence of the results obtained with a design
extremely simple and cheap, we felt that we could make a collective destiny, for the conduct of it.

1.2-Purpose
Besides saving energy, directly benefit the environment, our project aims to awaken in people in general, the
awareness that all these post-consumer packaging can turn into something useful in the social side.
The registration with the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property) was required to ensure the social purpose
and that God willing, together we deliver a better quality of life for many people, with a little more comfort,
because our purpose not draw dividends in the marketing of it, but perhaps even generate income and jobs for
cooperatives of collectors, institutions, etc.., with projects managed by people with good character and committed
to the fraternal society. What Fortunately there is the personal contacts or the hundreds of emails received.
It is appropriate to emphasize the intention of hundreds of people in the implementation of numerous projects
throughout Brazil, and demonstrating with this gesture of citizenship and responsibility, the direct consequences of
the rise in relief and distribution of electric energy that can happen at times peak of a region, and why not, the
whole country?
Reflect and put into practice everything that is good in you, remember that we live very little to lose time with
meanness, and that small initiatives today, may have excellent results in the future.
1.3-"Special Care"
Important observation is needed in the care we should have in handling the pet bottles, tetra pak cartons,
finally, with the garbage as a rule. The precautions are on the merits of such packages, to avoid the
contagion of very serious diseases, such as Leptospirosis, from the urine of rats.
If in doubt check with the health monitoring, secretary of health of his city, even with skilled people on the
care needed and how to carry out decontamination of them.
Remember: "Better safe than sorry."
2-How does a Solar Heater
2.1 Movement by end-siphon
The principle of operation by end siphon is what fits and simple systems to our project, as long as the possibility of
installation of the collector with the top of the same, ie the top bar the return of hot water, be between 10cm. and
up to 3 meters below the lower (bottom) of the housing or shell, as the diagram below.
Diagram 1
This gap is necessary to ensure the movement of water in
the collector with a difference in density between hot and
cold water, and that as the water heats up in columns of the
collector, it rises to the top of the box or tank, while where
the cold water being heavier is aimed at the bottom of the
collector, pushing the hot water tank or the box, keeping the
movement as long as solar irradiation. Process similar to
conventional heating of the system with siphon end,
differing only in the materials used in its manufacture.
Item 6-fisherman hot water, the diagram 1, should be done with a rubber hose, those used in dishwashers, or
flexible conduit yellow. Its function is to monitor the change in water level, seeking always the hottest part. Attach
one end to the flange, and the other end to a buoy with a size sufficient to keep the fisherman above.
2.2 Forced-Circulation
System where the collector is higher than the box or container, an example is the heating of swimming pools. The
system is equipped with a termosensor, and the same for driving a motor, so the solar collector is producing hot
water, because without it, there would be an exchange of hot water in the cold collector.
It is necessary to install a check valve so that in times when the solar collector is not warming up, avoid the
reverse cycle, since water from the collector is cold and heavier than the water of the box or container, and

Collector will function as a sink of heat, all cold and hot water stored or heated, when available in the system of
supplementary electric heating.

3.1-Step by step in building the solar collector
The solar collector is the component that deserves special attention, being the same, is directly responsible for
performance of a solar heating system.
Our solar collector differs from the conventional, in terms of materials used in its construction and thermal
efficiency, because as a matter of lowering costs, we use the columns to absorb heat, PVC pipe less efficient than
the copper tubes used in collectors conventional market, while limiting the temperature to levels that maintain the
rigidity of PVC, without causing the softening of these, and consequently, undermine the structure of the solar
heater on the upper part, causing leaks.
Without forgetting the box or container, if they are of materials with the temperature limits for accumulation.
PET bottles and tetra pak cartons fit properly, are the role of the box, the absorption of solar panel and glass in
conventional collectors, which is designed to both protect the inside of the collector of external interference,
especially the winds and variations of temperature, creating the greenhouse effect. Although simple, it contains
details required in the process. For example:
3.1.1-Choice of pet bottles, and what size and cut them
Three are the bottles we use in the construction of it, by giving preference to the transparent (glass) in the
formation of columns of thermal absorption: Lisas bottles, belts and bottles of Coke and Pepsi (new model).
We use the green bottle just for the cutting of strips in different moorings, described throughout the manual.
To facilitate the cutting of bottles (glass), we suggest a simple template, or cut 2 pieces of PVC pipe 100 mm: 1 to
29 cm and the other with 31 cm and then make a cut lengthwise in 2 tubes, allowing the placing the bottle in it,
defining the size of the cylinder to be cut.
The pipe of 29 cm used for measuring the cutting of Lisas and bottles of Pepsi (new model) and the tube of 31 cm
only for the cutting of bottles of Coke.
Suggestions: after consumption of soda, rinse the bottle and let drain. Bote in the refrigerator for 2 min without the
lid and take it to cover the fridge quickly. As the air inside the bottle back to the room temperature increases the
volume, remains the same with the original format, eliminating the risk that, when stored in cool place,
self-kneading it.
If you have a few bottles, and some mashed them and if you want to take advantage of them, destampe it and add
100 ml of cold water, cover it and take the micro wave for 45 seconds, remove from oven and immediately turn it
in horizontal by some 10 seconds, then leave it standing and then carefully desenrosque the cap slowly to release

the steam, leaving the cool bottle without the cap. But the question is: why not use hot water?
Because the bottle without the pressure of steam and support, to receive the hot water is all deformed.
Note: this operation seeks to protect itself goggle, gloves, coat, and place far enough from other people, especially
children.
3.1.2-boxes of 1 liter Tetra Pak (milk, juices, etc.).
Tetra pak boxes have in their composition, 5% aluminum, 20% polyethylene and 75% of cellulose, which makes
their collection and only role, thus requiring special equipment for separation of such materials.
There are few companies specialized in this process, which discourages the collectors, although the campaigns
leading manufacturer (July/2004 Superinteressante Magazine, page 79). The application of them in our project
offers excellent results, since the combination of such materials, avoids the bend in the temperature that will be
submitted to the contrary is to use paper.
For a perfect fit inside the bottles of Coke or the Lisas, cut the box with 23 cm, and the bottles of Pepsi (new
model) with 20 cm in length (Fig.1), with 1 cut-over 7 cm at the bottom of the box in both sizes (Fig.2), will fit the
neck of the next bottle.
There just fold it in a simple way, using the lateral bending of the same (Fig.3), and two diagonal folds in on top
(Fig.4), which will follow the curvature of the bottle top, act as support to sustain the housing. We paint it with
matte black synthetic enamel paint drying quickly to external and internal, used to iron, wood, etc., But avoid
buying into spray, it is very expensive to paint rather than cans of 1kg.
Note: Do not use ink to glow, as will the performance of the collector, since the sun will be partly reflected.
Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3
Fig.4 Fig.5
3.1.3-cutting, painting the pipes, and assembly of the collector
The reason we use a maximum of 5 bottles per column, is not to hinder the installation of the collector in relation
to the height of the water box or reservoir, as discussed in Section 2.1 by end-Movement siphon, because here in
the south of the country requires that is greater inclination on the grounds of local latitude.
Mentioned as an example Tubarão-SC., Where I live, the latitude is 28.3 º S, while in Brasilia, the latitude is 15.5 º
S.
Back into the 4-item topics relating to the installation of the assembly.
In our project we use the collector tubes and connections of the type I 20 mm weldable quality of good quality,
with the size of the tubes of the columns depending on the type and number of cylinders. Remember that before
cutting the tubes of the columns, check the types of bottles available, because the ideal is to choose, choose one
type for each collector, here is the measure that best fits:
92 cm for columns with 4-cylinder straight
To 101-cm columns with 5 bottles of Pepsi waist (mod. new)
108 cm-to columns with 5 bottles of Coca
Note: The design of the bottle of Coca new (yellow cover) has changed, so
to maintain the size of the column, merge with Pepsi (mod.novo)

Before painting the tubes of the columns with the same ink used in the boxes, we must isolate with duct tape the 2
ends approximately 2 cm, after which it is painted cut the ribbon due to the type you plug in the connections.
The tubes of distance between columns should be 8.5 cm and without paint, standard measurement for all
collectors, no matter the types of bottles.
The assembly becomes simple to follow an order to put the components, taking care to use the adhesive only in the
tubes and connections, the top of the collector where the hot water circulates. At the bottom should just fit them
with the help of a rubber hammer, making the maintenance, if necessary, just undocked the bar lower, without
compromising the size of the columns, as if cut would be cut, and the loss of all connections and hoses away.
Recalling: to avoid leaks, the quality of the pipes and connections is essential. Watch out, the cheap comes out
expensive.
To simplify the assembly of solar collector, we need to glue the three pieces of Fig.1, repeating the operation in
the number of columns of solar collector. Conjuntinho Cole one another to form the 5 columns. Then insert the
bottles and tetra pak cartons (fig.2) in 5 columns, not forgetting to close the last bottle of each column, cutting
off another bottle, but on top of the side cover. In conclusion, the fit of the bus below (Fig.4), closing this module.
We recommend for cold regions, is shown to fill the bottom, between the bottle and box tetra pak (Fig.3), with
some isothermal not absorb moisture (eg plastic labels, plastic bags).
The reason to opt for modules of 5 columns, it is about management, because it is extremely easy to upload it to
the location of installation. Amend a module to another, until five at most, to avoid tension on buses.
According to Fig.5, we should seal the 1st bottle of each column, with strips of rubber (eg inner tubes) or tape auto
merger. This prevents the escape of heat from inside the column, and prevent the wind turn the cylinders, taking
the position of Tetra Pak cartons, which is upwards, avoiding loss in income.
In Fig.6, only two speakers, 4 cylinder straight up.
For better viewing, set up to follow, step by step with pictures, part of 2 columns of solar collector:
Fig.1 Fig.2 Fig.3
Fig.4 Fig.5 Fig.6
Box 3.2-or water reservoir
Even the water box on the site may be used in the supply of hot and cold water, since it has a minimum capacity of
500 liters, to make available more or less than 250 liters of hot water, since we use as reservoir the upper half of
the box for the solar heating system. The ideal and recommended, it would be a reservoir for hot water only, with
the size corresponding to the daily number of people, and near points of consumption to avoid waste, until it
reaches the hot water tank.
Since the shell is responsible to collect the hot water, it is necessary a good thermal insulation, which is found in
conventional batteries market, where use is high-efficiency vacuum.
These batteries have the majority of heating aid for rainy days or covert, with electricity or gas, controlled by
thermostats that trigger the feature where the water temperature is below the pre-set by the user.

Our design for the character to make it economically viable for all, has no such recourse, and the shower has been
replaced by common, but with the use of an electronic controller for adjusting the temperature, connected in series
with the input electric energy of the shower.
Common market, it facilitates the adjustment of the ideal temperature for bathing, without the need to vary the
flow of water in the registry.
The use of basic materials available in all regions, is of extreme importance. Applied in the project a plastic box as
a reservoir of 250 liters, but that does not indicate that boxes of other materials are released, but be very careful
and not use containers that contain chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, etc. because even well-washed
contaminated and continue offering the potential risks to health. So to avoid inconvenience, being sure of the
origin of them.
3.3-Thermal insulation of the box or container
As the thermal insulation has many options: from the Styrofoam as we found in several packages of supermarkets,
such that comes with cold (ex.com cheese, ham, etc.). And in appliances and electronics, also plastic bags, papers,
as an alternative for those who live in urban areas. In other regions we have great vacuum, such as: sawdust, wheat
hulls, rice husks, dry grass, etc.., But no humidity.
It is extremely easy the use of such insulation, filling boxes of 1 liter tetra pak (without leaving empty spaces),
closing them again, resulting in each box isothermal block. You set these blocks in the box reservoir or use glue or
tape, and finally the way you feel better, taking care to fill the spaces between the boxes, when set in round
containers or rounded corners, with plastic bags, papers, etc. ..
Vale warn that if the box or container is outdoors, you should have protection against the weather, or otherwise the
insulation will be damaged.
As the replacement of cold water is at the bottom of the box or shell, no insulation is required at that location.
Another type of insulation simple and effective but more expensive, is to put a box of water within a compartment
made of wood, bricks, or even inside another larger box, enough to take a break on the side of at least 6 cm, due to
filling with any of the insulation above, not forgetting that it is mandatory to isolate the cover of the box.
Apply the thermal insulation, only after all the holes and connections necessary for the installation of assembly.
4-topics relating to the installation of all
4.1-dimensional system as the consumption of the country and region
When put into practice the project in October 2002, built a solar collector with 100 pet bottles, 100 boxes of 1 liter
tetra pak, arranged in 25 columns with 4 bottles each, totaling a floor area of absorption of 1.80 m 2, and a plastic
box of 250 liters in the role of shell, coated with polystyrene of 20 mm. It is noteworthy that the thickness of
insulation is not sufficient to maintain or store the hot water until late at night.
As installed almost summer, and that with the sun around 6 hours, heats the water to 52 º C, being necessary to
mix with cold water.
But to reach the winter, the temperature of cold water in the box Shark, is around 13 to 16 º C, against 22 to 25 º C
in summer, and that due to the difference between the seasons, in addition to the reduction of solar radiation in
winter, the thermal efficiency drops from 52 º C in summer to a maximum of 38 º C in winter.
To correct the problem, we built another collector with the same dimensions of the former, on sunny days to meet
the normal consumption of 4 people. But for the summer we will increase the reservoir to 500 liters, or disable
part of the collectors to prevent overheating. Important: install the collectors independent of each other, to
facilitate a possible maintenance.
For those who have, or may install a box or container with a volume equal to or higher than required, a very
interesting and simple solution to find the temperature and volume of hot water, s that meets their needs for
consumption, is to installing the outlet of cold water to the solar collector as low as possible. Attach the flange to
the inside of the box or container, 1 adapter as internal flange, and 1 curve of 90 ° with 2 pieces of pipe at its ends,
setting 1 of the adapter tubes without adhesive, and the other serves to increase the options for regulation (Pág.5,
diagram 1, item 7 - Fisherman rotating), as by rotating the set, you varies and determines the amount and
temperature of water to be heated according to season. Note: Option great a prototype in a laboratory school
experiences.
Considering the above, we suggest that each is the size next to the needs of consumption of each home, each

project requires the observation of various factors, and among them:
Examples: 1) position of the solar collector in relation to geographic north
2) inclination of the solar collector on the latitude
3) Region and place to be installed
Note: To find the latitude you need, or live, visit the website:
www.aondefica.com
On the holes to be made in cash or reservoir, we suggest
simply as references in percentage of the height of the box:
4.2-Support for fixing the solar collector
It is at the discretion of each of the material to be used as support for fixing the solar collector, but indicated that at
least the two buses are tied to bars of ¾ galvanized pipe, or something to ensure the alignment of the collector
Important: to avoid air bubbles hinder the movement of water in the collector, you need a gap of 2 cm for every
meter run, and never leave the buses curves.
Important note: never leave water in the collector fails, at risk of overheating and destruction of it.
Check the chart:
Digraph 3
If you want to set straight on the roof without taking into account the local latitude, should install the solar
collector with at least 10 and inclination toward the geographic north as close as possible, and that will increase
the absorption area of solar panels, increasing the collector to compensate for the loss of placements.
It is appropriate to emphasize that almost all the problems of thermal efficiency of a solar heater, cease to exist as
we approach the north and northeast.

To give a preference by the end of movement by crane, it is mandatory that the bottom of the box or heat reservoir,
is always up on the top of the solar collector (as per item 2.1 Movement-term siphon), which lies to each choose
the best alternative for the site, without forgetting that the talk about housing or shell, we are talking about weight,
so again, do not improvise in questionable places that may collapse and cause serious problems. (Remember that
each liter of water weighs 1 kilo)
4.3-Thermal insulation of the ducts above the collector, by the box or container
Engage the bus's top collector and hot water pipe leading to the box with styrofoam, tying it to the tubes with strips
cut from pet bottle green. Note: The polystyrene does not stand for a long time exposed to the sun.
4.4-Distance between the collector and the box or container
The closest possible in order to minimize thermal losses while taking into account also the distances of the points
of consumption, thus avoiding the waste until the water hot.
4.5-blender with hot water / cold, simple, but practical
The site to be deployed the solar heating system, have facilities for hot and cold water, only requires connection to
carry the box or tank, the installation of hot water.
Where the water supply of the property is only with cold water, we suggest a mixer simple and efficient, built with
PVC pipes and connections, indicated for the shower, but with some modifications, can integrate the other points
of consumption in the home, such as kitchen, tank, toilet.

"Cash for Clunkers", government incentive to recycle your ride!

The Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) better known as "Cash for Clunkers" is the government's new vehicle trade-in program. You can get from $3.500 to $4.500 for your old car when you trade it in for a smaller more economic vehicle.

To be eligible for the program, you must trade-in a vehicle that meets the following criteria:

• Must have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in
• Must have a "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less
• Must be in drivable condition and
• Must have been continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in

Note: For some transactions, work trucks (very large pickup trucks and cargo vans) only qualify if they are 2001 model year or earlier.

Natural Fragrances to Eliminate Toxicity

Fragrances can be one of the the sources of cancer say some recent studies. This is the air hazard I find more difficult to eliminate for a Greener environment. The market noticed that odors sell well either in cosmetics, shampoos, lotions, perfumes, soaps, cleaning products and even food, such as puddings, cookies, cakes, not to mention the strongly scented cleaning products! Almost everything we consume has a scent, did you notice? Often versions of fragrance free are not even available...I know some work places are promoting a work environment that has to be fragrance free. Will this going to work? I really wanted to know how this is going to be? Will people going to be prohibited to use perfumes and deodorants?

There are a few solutions to substitute some of these scented products. I have heard of soy candles. They are made out of soy wax and contain no harmful carcinogens. Producing 95% less soot than their counterparts. You can order them online at http://www.findsoycandles.com/.

If you need just a product that will block odors, when you fry fish or from the garbage can, you can use a open box of baking soda, that by the way is an excellent alternative to tooth paste; 100% natural, cheap and it will whiten your teeth at the first use.

If you want to have your house with a good smell, there are natural solutions as well. You can make your own potpourri with lemon and orange skins, ginger, lavender and cinnamon and vanilla bean sticks. If you make a strong infusions of this elements, they will also scent your house.

Another option is also the use of essential oils infused in wood chips as a potpourri. Essential Oils are pure aromatic plant extracts that are obtained from aromatic plant distillation. Essential Oils have a variety of applications that have positive effects on physical, psychological and emotional bodies of the individual. Each oil features its own distinct qualities, aromas, and fragrances:

Organic Pesticide

Are you interested in a green way to get rid of pests from your garden such as ants, beetles? Do you want the rabbits and dears away from your vegetables? No fungus, mold or mildew?
Here there is a wonderful and organic recipe that will solve your problems, with no toxic and expensive chemicals and it also works as an insect repellant:

Garlic pesticide spray:

Soak 3 to 4 ounces of chopped garlic bulbs in 2 tablespoons of mineral oil for one day. Dissolve 1 tsp of fish emulsion in a pint of water and add it to your solution. Stir. Strain liquid and store in a glass container - not metal! Dilute 1 part solution to every 20 parts of water. Kills aphids, mosquitoes and onion flies.

Another organic way to get rid of weeds and dandelions is to spray a mix of white vinegar and salt on them. All cheap, easy and safe to the environment!

EARTH SONG by Michael Jackson (1959-2009) - Tribute

From the album: History: Past, Present and Future, Book I (1995)
Michael Jackson was a socially engaged person, previously making songs such as We are the World, to bring funds to the starving children in Africa, Black or White, talking about racism and the most environmentally engaged song: Earth Song.

Lyrics:

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about apathy
(What about us)
I need you
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(ooo, ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

COP15 - Campaign to Protect the World’s Intact Forests to Tackle Climate Change by Virginia Young - International Forests and Climate Campaign

The Wilderness Society has spotted a glaring omission in negotiating text for the Copenhagen Climate Change agreement – protecting the world’s forests has gone missing!

More than 25% of annual global emissions come from the clearing, logging and disturbance of forests. It’s simple; we can not secure a safe climate without protecting the world’s forests.

It’s a no-brainer that the next climate deal needs to protect the world’s forests. We urgently need to tackle the enormous carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. More than 25% of annual global emissions come from the clearing, logging and disturbance of forests. It’s simple; we can not secure a safe climate without protecting the world’s forests.

The remaining intact tropical forests of developing countries including the forests of the Amazon, the Congo, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea will be affected by the outcomes of the next climate deal. A major concern is that the industrial logging industry is working to heavily influence the climate deal to make sure it does not protect the world’s forests.
If we do nothing, the next climate deal could end up as a vehicle not to protect forests, but to incentivise industrial logging and the conversion of natural forest to plantations, through payments from polluters for carbon credits".

The warped logic being presented by the logging industry is that by providing incentives for introducing so called Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) into intact natural forests, we can make sure those forests are logged a little nicer, so they emit less carbon pollution than totally go-for-broke logging!

Unfortunately, we all know that ‘SFM’ looks like a clear-fell coupe in Tasmania or Victoria.. We will see the ugly logging that is happening in Australia take place in the world’s last intact forests, destroying not just huge carbon banks but the home of endangered species like orangutans. This type of logging not only causes massive amounts of carbon pollution it also damages wildlife habitat and water availability.
We can not let this climate and biodiversity disaster happen.

The Wilderness Society’s International Forests and Climate campaigners have been meeting with the Australian Government and their negotiating team to try to convince them of the urgent need to protect the world’s forests. We have asked them to table a proposal at the upcoming climate talks in August that ask for the inclusion of the protection of forests in the next global climate deal.

To date, Australia has claimed to be a champion of protecting forests for climate change – especially in Indonesia and PNG. Our international climate team will be attending the next climate talks in August to keep a watching eye on the negotiating team and to ensure that Australia lives up to its claims and promises.

We’re also working to convince other countries, including Norway who is planning to contribute large sums of money to reducing carbon pollution from destroying forests in developing countries, to support a climate deal that protect the world’s forests.

We are educating all countries about the multiple benefits of forest protection including securing indigenous peoples’ rights and interests.

The fate of Australia’s precious forests is also tied to the outcome of the climate negotiations. The current rules of the Kyoto protocol are skewed to understate forest emissions from logging in Australia. Under the Kyoto protocol the climate impact of forestry operations doesn’t have to be accounted for, so Australia doesn’t count the massive amount of carbon emissions caused by the logging, clearing and burning of our forests.

All forests are important in fighting climate change, so of course we are pushing for a radical upgrade of the treatment of forests in developed and developin countries in the new climate agreement.

With your support we will ensure the protection of the world’s forests and help secure a safe climate for our future.

Paper or Plastic Bag?

That is an easy answer! Paper bags are a good option if compared to plastic bags. Paper bags take about a month to naturally decompose in the environment, while plastic bags take 20 to 1000 years to decompose, depending on the density of the plastic that was used.

The best alternative is the now so popular "Go Green" cloth bags that can be bought for inviting prices in any local supermarket or even online. They cost an average of $3.00 per unity. Cloth bags are reusable, you cannot possibly go greener than that! Keeping them in the car,it is the best way to never forget them whenever you go shopping. Better than this, they always come in handy to many other tasks, such as when you go to the beach, picnic or soccer game! It is a trendy and versatile "family item"!

Obama Invests $2.4 Billion in Hybrid Car Technology

August 5th, 2009

President Obama’s administration announced $2.4 billion in grants to car companies and battery-makers, boosting the chant for US manufacturers to build new generation auto batteries for hybrid and plug-in cars. Michigan based companies received approximately half of the funds.

"If we want to reduce our dependence on oil, put Americans back to work and reassert our manufacturing sector as one of the greatest in the world, we must produce the advanced, efficient vehicles of the future," said Obama in Elkhart, Indiana.

Almost all battery manufacturing for advanced technology vehicles is currently based in Asia. US government is making a move on battery-powered vehicles, aiming to popularize the concept of small, non pollutant fuel efficient hybrid cars and electric car batteries. This fund should also optimize infrastructure necessary to allow drivers to bypass gas stations and charge their cars from the electric conductor.

How long does it take to decompose?

Check out how long each of these products take to decompose in the environment. It is scary!!! We need to recycle, reduce, reuse!

Thank You Kimberly-Clark for Protecting Ancient Forests

In a tremendous victory for ancient forests, including the North American Boreal Forest, Kimberly-Clark has announced a new policy that protects endangered forests.

The company has set a goal of obtaining 100 percent of the wood fiber for its products including its flagship brand, Kleenex from environmentally responsible sources by 2011. The policy increases the company’s use of FSC-certified pulp and recycled fiber globally, and will prevent all K-C products from ever being made from endangered forests.

eSolar plugs solar plant into California grid by Martin LaMonica

eSolar is doing what so many other solar start-up wish they were already doing: feeding electricity into the grid.

The two-year-old concentrating solar company on Wednesday will host an event in Lancaster, California to celebrate the opening of a demonstration facility that's converting the sun's desert heat into electricity.

At five megawatts--enough to supply about 1,500 homes--it's making a modest contribution to overall electricity generation. But the Lancaster plant has been crucial to prove that eSolar's technology produces cost-effective electricity and can be replicated, said company CEO Bill Gross.

Concentrating solar power systems concentrate sunlight to make steam, which is converted into electricity through a turbine. eSolar's plant is the first to use a single tower to make steam, which is slightly more efficient than traditional reflective trough technology, according to Gross. It uses thousands of computer-controlled mirrors to reflect the light onto the tower.

He said the plant produces power at less than the retail rate for electricity in California, which is 13 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The company has signed deals to supply its technology and projects to energy project developer NRG Energy for plants in the southwest U.S. and ACME in India. Gross said those projects are expected to break ground later this year.

Dish washer vs. Hand wash - Surprising results!

I used to be very proud about hand washing my dishes, what I judged to be the best ecologically thing to do. To my deception, researching about hand washing dishes versus dish washer, I came to find out that modern dish washers are the way to go! They use half the energy consumed during the other process, use one-sixth of the water and less soap. The study also found that dishwashers excelled in cleanliness over hand washing.

The study recommends using the dish washer with a full load and avoiding the inefficient heat-dry, rinse-hold and pre-rinse features. Less soap is also another relevant advantage because of all the chemicals used in it that just go back to the ecosystem water cycle.

The average faucet flows at 2 gallons per minute, the average Energy Star-rated dishwasher uses 4 gallons per cycle and their energy use ranges from 1.59kWh per load down to 0.87kWh per load.

Going Green with the Greens!

Use a mix of processed vegetable skins, egg shells and meat bones to put in the lawn as a natural, recycled fertilizer.

Ants do not like coffee grind. I use it inside the house every time I notice some ants in the kitchen. They disappear! I put in the little nooks and cranes I see them going to. If you pierce a clove of garlic and put it in the garden, that will also avoid beetles. It is also natural and avoid the use of toxic and environmental harmful pesticides.

To keep his lawn looking good there is a product called Natures Magic that you can order online. Also there are two Soil Activators that can help the soil for your lawn and plants. The two are called Humic Acid and Seaweed. They helpe to improve good soil and its safe for our environment. Just mix them in water!

Bone meal, diatomaceous earth, and composed materials fortify the soils instead of commercial chemicals. Use plants that are drought and disease resistant. Use self-rising cornmeal to get rid of ants and plant certain flowers and plants that repel insects as well.

Replace all of the water loving plants for native plants that are drought resistant. Plant native grasses and wild flower from your area. You will notice more birds and small animals in your yard.

Talking About Plastic...

-Last year,86% of disposable water bottles became trash. The United States used 1.5 million of gallons of crude oil to make new disposable water bottles. Therefore it is overdue to abolish the use of plastic water bottles.

-Plastic bottle water is bad to your health. During the transportation process or if left in the car, under heat, plastic liberates a toxic substance in the water that can cause cancer; it becomes carcinogenic.

- Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch, “a swirling soup of plastic that scientists estimate is twice the size of Texas”!
Hence it is obvious that as consumers, we need to start giving preference to biodegradable material when buying any type of product. Some material such as plastic and Styrofoam take a million years or more to decompose!
